Window Installation Stopped Working

What’s Happening

When a window stops working after installation, it almost always comes down to one of three things: a hardware failure, a frame or sash that has shifted out of square, or a seal or locking mechanism that was never fully seated during the original install. In most cases, the window itself is fine – the problem is with how it opens, closes, or locks.

Call (562) 478-8017

This matters because a window that won’t open or won’t latch isn’t just inconvenient. If it’s stuck open, you lose weatherproofing and security. If it’s stuck closed and it’s a required egress window – say, in a bedroom – that’s a code issue worth taking seriously. And if the sash is binding or grinding when you try to move it, forcing it is usually the fastest way to crack a glass pane or strip a balance mechanism. The right move is to stop pushing, figure out the cause, and get it looked at before the small problem becomes a bigger one.

Why It Happens

The Sash or Frame Has Shifted Out of Square

Windows are precision openings. When the rough framing around a newly installed window settles – even a little – the window unit can rack slightly out of plumb. You’ll feel this as resistance when you slide or swing the window open, and you may notice that the sash no longer sits flush in the frame. Look at the gap around the sash when it’s closed: if it’s wider on one side than the other, the frame has moved.

The Hardware Wasn’t Fully Set or Has Already Worn

Cranks, tilt latches, balance shoes, and locking cams all have to be calibrated to the specific window unit. If any of these were installed slightly off, or if the hardware was damaged during shipping or handling, you’ll get a window that either won’t stay open, won’t pull fully closed, or locks at the wrong point. The sign to look for: the handle feels loose, stops before it should, or you have to lift the sash slightly to get the lock to engage.

The Weatherstripping or Balance System Is Binding

Weatherstripping that’s too thick, pinched, or misaligned will drag against the sash and make a window feel stiff or sticky. On double-hung windows, the balance system – the spring-loaded or block-and-tackle mechanism inside the frame channel – can lose tension or come unclipped entirely, which makes the sash drop or refuse to stay up on its own. You’ll hear a dull thump if a balance shoe has come free, or feel uneven resistance as you slide the sash up.

A Seal Has Failed or Condensation Has Locked the Sash

On a new installation, if moisture got into the rough opening before the window was fully flashed and trimmed, the wood components in the surrounding frame can swell and press against the window unit. You’ll often notice this after a rain: the window was fine before, and now it won’t budge. Check whether the sticking came on suddenly after wet weather – that’s a strong signal that moisture is the cause, not the hardware itself.

What to Do Right Now

  • Stop forcing it. If the window won’t move freely, pushing harder risks cracking the glass, bending the sash, or stripping the balance mechanism. One attempt to confirm it’s stuck is enough.
  • Take a photo of the gap around the sash. Before anyone touches anything, photograph the sash from inside and outside so the technician can see exactly where it sits in the frame. This often tells the whole story before a wrench comes out.
  • Note when the problem started. Did it happen right after installation? After a rain? After a cold snap? The timing narrows down the cause considerably and helps the technician come prepared.
  • Check the locking cam and handle. Try moving the latch or crank all the way through its range and note where it stops. If it stops early or feels loose, that’s hardware – not a frame problem. This is safe to check by hand.
  • If the window is stuck open and you have small children or pets in the home, secure the room. A sash that won’t close is a fall risk and a security gap. Don’t leave it unattended.

How We Fix It

When your local Lightwell Windows & Doors team arrives, the first thing we do is a full open-and-close test with the window as-is, before we touch anything. We check plumb and square with a level, test the hardware through its full range, and inspect the weatherstripping and balance system. That diagnosis usually takes less than fifteen minutes and tells us whether this is a hardware adjustment, a component replacement, or a sign that the original installation needs to be corrected.

From there, the fix path falls under our window installation or window replacement service depending on what we find. If it’s a hardware or alignment issue from the install, we correct it. If a component needs to be swapped – a balance shoe, a locking cam, a stretch of weatherstripping – we carry parts from our eight product lines, including PGT, ECO Window Systems, ES Windows, and ViewLux, so we’re not waiting on a special order in most cases.

Before any work starts, you get a written price. That’s not a courtesy – it’s part of how every Lightwell job runs, no exceptions. And the finished work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right when we’re done, we make it right.

"Replaced six windows. The crew laid runners through the house and vacuumed each room as they finished. With a crawling baby, that no mess thing meant a lot. Windows are gorgeous."

- Rosalind Kemp

"Lovely windows and a tidy install. One window came in a couple weeks late from the factory, so that opening finished after the others. They kept me posted and the rest was spotless."

- Mia Donnelly

"Quiet, considerate install of several windows. They cleaned the glass and the sills and vacuumed every room. You'd never know a crew had been through. House is quieter and brighter."
