CWS Window Replacement: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
If you have a CWS window that’s fogged, cracked, warped, or simply won’t seal, replacement typically runs $850 – $1,400 per opening installed in Los Angeles, depending on glass package, frame condition, and whether we’re swapping the sash or the full unit. We carry CWS-compatible glass packs and hardware, and in most cases we can complete the swap in a single visit without pulling trim or drywall. Most Los Angeles homeowners discover the failure the same way: a window that used to keep street noise out now lets it in, or a corner of the glass that fogs every morning and clears by noon.
Which CWS Models This Applies To
The CWS product line is broad, and the replacement path depends on which series you have. If your window label (etched in the corner of the glass or printed on a sticker along the top frame edge) shows a CW or CWS prefix followed by a four-digit code, we can usually identify the series and glass spec without opening the wall. The main distinction: CWS vinyl single-hung and slider models use a sash that lifts out cleanly, so a glass-pack replacement is straightforward. Their aluminum-clad and impact-rated lines are more particular – the glazing bead, the setting block depth, and the corner gaskets differ by series, and using the wrong aftermarket glass pack leaves you with a seal that fails in the first Santa Ana season.
OEM versus aftermarket is a real decision here. CWS will sell replacement sashes through their dealer network, but lead times in Los Angeles can stretch to six or eight weeks. A quality aftermarket glass pack – tempered or laminated glass cut to the exact rough opening, with the right Low-E coating for Southern California exposure – usually gives you the same thermal performance for about 30% less and installs the same day. The gotcha: if your CWS window is an impact-rated unit (common in hillside neighborhoods like Sherman Oaks or Studio City where wind loads are higher), the replacement glass must meet the original design pressure rating. We check the original label before we order anything.
Signs Your CWS Window Replacement Is Failing
- Condensation between the panes that doesn’t wipe away. This is the classic sealed-unit failure. The desiccant inside the spacer has absorbed all the moisture it can hold, and the argon or krypton fill is gone. In Los Angeles humidity swings, this shows up as morning fog that fades, then returns earlier each day as the seal degrades further.
- Cold drafts around the sash edge, even when the window is locked. CWS sashes sit on a compression gasket that flattens over time, especially on west-facing windows that bake in the afternoon sun. Once the gasket loses its shape, air moves through, and no amount of locking helps. The fix is usually a new sash or a full unit replacement, not weatherstripping.
- Visible cracks in the frame corners or a sash that racks when you open it. This is the early warning that the welded corner on a vinyl CWS sash has started to separate. Los Angeles sun is hard on vinyl – the expansion and contraction over a decade can fatigue the weld. Left alone, the sash drops in the frame and the lock mechanism stops engaging.
- Hard water staining that has etched the glass. This is common in Pacific Palisades and other coastal Los Angeles neighborhoods where irrigation overspray hits the glass. The staining isn’t cleanable once etched, and the only real fix is replacing the glass pack with a new unit.
- Street noise you never used to hear. A CWS double-pane unit that loses its gas fill and seal starts transmitting sound, not just temperature. If you’re suddenly hearing the 405 or the trash trucks on Figueroa more than you remember, the window’s acoustic performance has failed – and the glass is usually the culprit, not the frame.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
| Service | Typical Los Angeles Range |
|---|---|
| CWS glass pack replacement (standard Low-E, double-pane) | $350 – $650 per opening |
| Full sash replacement (CWS-compatible, same operation) | $550 – $900 per opening |
| Full unit replacement (frame + sash, any necessary flashing) | $1,100 – $1,800 per opening |
| Impact-rated glass pack (Miami-Dade or equivalent) | $650 – $1,200 per opening |
The range is driven by glass size, accessibility (second story costs more in labor), and whether the existing frame is still square and in good condition. The written price we give you before any work starts includes the part, the labor, disposal of the old sash or glass, and a clean-up pass with shoe covers and drop cloths in place the whole time. There is no change order at the end; the number you approve is the number you pay. Every replacement is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise – if something is not right, we make it right, no debate and no countdown.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely do yourself: identify the model from the label, take a photo of the failed unit, and check whether the sash lifts out easily. That information helps us order the right part before we arrive. What you should not do is try to remove a CWS sash without knowing how the balance system works – the balances are under tension, and releasing one the wrong way can send the sash out of the frame and into a window sill, or worse, onto someone below if it’s a second-story unit. We have seen a homeowner in Silver Lake break a double-pane unit trying to separate the glass pack from the sash with a utility knife; the glass shattered, and the cleanup cost more than the replacement would have. FAQs
A properly installed CWS or CWS-compatible glass pack typically lasts 12 – 18 years in Los Angeles, though west-facing units in direct afternoon sun and coastal units exposed to salt air tend toward the shorter end. The frame usually outlives the sealed glass unit by several years, which is why glass-pack replacement is so common. Call (562) 478-8017 if you’d like us to assess your specific windows.
It depends on what failed. A broken lock or balance can often be repaired with a replacement part we stock on the truck, but a fogged or cracked glass pack cannot be repaired – the sealed unit is a factory assembly and must be replaced as a whole. We’ll tell you which path makes sense and give you a written price either way.
Most glass-pack and sash replacements are completed in under two hours per window, from drop cloths down to clean-up photo. Full-frame replacements take longer – typically a half day per opening if we’re doing a complete tear-out and reflash. We work around nap times and school schedules where we can.
We stock the most common CWS-compatible glass packs, balances, locks, and gaskets on our trucks, and for anything unusual we can typically source it within a week. If it’s an impact-rated series, we order the rated glass before we do anything else so there’s no second trip.
Give us a call at (562) 478-8017 and we’ll put together a free estimate for your CWS window replacement. You’ll get a written price before any work starts, a crew that covers your floors and asks before moving anything, and a window that works like it should.
