CGI Impact Garage Doors: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
A complete CGI impact garage door, installed in Los Angeles, typically runs between $2,800 and $6,500 depending on the door width, panel profile, and whether you need a single or double door. We stock CGI-compatible impact doors and the replacement parts that keep them working, and most hardware swaps can be done same week, not same month. The way most Los Angeles homeowners discover a problem is subtle: the door gets heavier to lift by hand, it shudders partway up the track, or one side sits noticeably lower than the other when closed. You might also hear a pop from the spring area followed by the door refusing to move at all, which usually means a torsion spring let go. That is the moment to stop pressing the opener button and start figuring out whether you need a part or a full door replacement. We can help you make that call without pressure, over the phone, before anyone schedules a visit.
Lightwell Windows & Doors is an independent service provider, not a CGI dealer or affiliate. We carry and service CGI impact doors because they hold up in coastal wind zones and because their hardware is specific enough that matching the right part matters. Keith Yamada has been doing windows and doors work across the Los Angeles basin for going on two decades, and he will tell you straight when a door can be saved with a $90 part and when it is time to stop feeding it.
Which CGI Models This Applies To
CGI impact garage doors fall into a few product families, and the hardware is not universal across all of them. The most common lines we work on in Los Angeles are the CGI model 7000 and 8000 series, plus the Cabana and Estate collection doors that show up on coastal properties and canyon homes where windborne debris is a genuine concern. The easiest way to identify your door is not from the look of it. Look for the data plate or certification sticker, usually on the left side of the door panel near the bottom or on the horizontal track near the opener. That plate gives you the series, panel width, and wind load rating. Write that down before you call anyone. It saves a full truck roll.
One compatibility gotcha with CGI specifically: their impact-rated doors use a thicker door section profile than a standard garage door, and the hinge geometry is offset to account for that extra depth. A generic hinge from a parts warehouse will mount and work for a while, then start chewing through the section and pulling the door out of balance. We use OEM or matched-spec aftermarket parts only, because the labor to install a wrong hinge twice costs more than buying the right one once. Keith’s signature line applies here more than anywhere else he uses it: the opening is as important as the window, and on a garage door the track, hinges, and spring are the opening. Get that part right and everything else follows.
OEM vs. Aftermarket for CGI
For springs and cables on an impact-rated CGI door, OEM is almost always worth it. The spring is wound to a specific cycle count matched to the door’s weight and balance, and a generic spring that is close but not exact will throw the door off its lift curve. For struts, hinges, and bottom seals, matched-spec aftermarket parts are usually fine and can save 20 to 30 percent. We stock both. The difference is that we will not put a part on your door that we would not put on a CGI door we were installing from new. If there is any doubt about fit, we say so before we start.
Signs Your CGI Impact Garage Door Is Failing
- The door shudders or hesitates partway up the track. This usually means the torsion spring is losing tension or a cable has started to fray and is no longer winding evenly on the drum. Caught early, the fix is a spring rewind or cable replacement. Ignored, it becomes a door that drops unexpectedly.
- One side sits lower than the other when closed. A cable has stretched or started unwinding from the drum, which means that side of the door is carrying less tension. Running the opener like this bends the top section over time and can crack the strut that CGI doors rely on for impact rating.
- You hear a loud pop from the spring area, then the opener strains or refuses to move the door. That is a torsion spring failure. Do not try to lift the door yourself. The spring is not the only problem by that point; the sudden release usually bangs the drum and can kink the cable on the other side too.
- The door is visibly heavier when you operate it manually. Impact doors are heavy to begin with. When the spring is correctly wound, the door should feel balanced enough that one adult can lift it with moderate effort. If it feels like a two-person job, the spring is under-wound or worn past its cycle rating.
- You see hairline cracks at the hinge mounting points on the panel. This is the slow failure that kills impact doors from the inside. Vibration plus salt air corrosion in Los Angeles beach neighborhoods can work a hinge screw loose just enough to flex the panel material around the hole. Left alone, the panel eventually tears out. We fix this by re-locating the hinge with a backing plate and matching hardware, not by over-tightening the same screw.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Los Angeles, expect these installed price ranges for CGI impact garage door components:
| Part or Service | Typical Installed Range |
|---|---|
| Torsion spring replacement (single door) | $280 – $420 |
| Extension spring pair (if applicable) | $240 – $380 |
| Cable replacement (pair, includes re-balance) | $200 – $340 |
| Hinge set replacement (full door) | $150 – $260 |
| Bottom seal replacement (impact-rated) | $120 – $220 |
| Full CGI impact garage door (single) | $2,800 – $4,800 |
| Full CGI impact garage door (double) | $4,200 – $6,500 |
The range on full doors comes down to panel profile, window count, and wind load rating required for your specific Los Angeles exposure. Parts only jobs are priced with the part listed separately from labor, so you can see exactly what you are paying for. Every job includes a written price before work starts and a workmanship warranty on our installation. We do not start until you have the number in writing. If we open up the door and find something the old part damaged, we call you before we add anything to the scope. No surprises at the end.
DIY or Call Us?
Some things on a garage door are safe for a careful homeowner to check. Look at the cables for fraying, run your hand along the bottom seal to check for cracks, and watch the door move through one full cycle to see if it shudders or binds. Those are observations you can make without touching anything under tension. What you should not do is touch the torsion spring or the cables attached to it. Those springs are wound under enough tension to break bones or worse if they release suddenly, and a cable that snaps while you are working near it moves faster than you can react. If the issue is the spring or a cable, call a trained professional. If it is a hinge or a seal, an experienced DIY person can usually handle it, but we are happy to do it for you and send you a photo of the cleanup before we leave. That is the Lightwell standard on every job, even a small one.
If you are not sure which category your door falls into, call (562) 478-8017 and describe what you are seeing. Keith or one of our team will tell you honestly whether it is a job for a pro or something you can tackle on a Saturday. No charge for the conversation.
FAQs
Most CGI torsion springs are rated for 10,000 to 15,000 cycles, which in a typical Los Angeles household means 8 to 12 years before replacement. Homes near the coast sometimes see shorter lives because salt air corrodes the spring coating faster, and that corrosion creates micro-fractures that eventually cause the spring to snap even before it reaches its cycle limit. If your spring is coated and you notice rust staining on it, plan for replacement sooner rather than later. Call (562) 478-8017 and we can check the spring date and cycle count during a free estimate visit.
In most cases, no. Torsion springs, cables, and hinges are wear parts designed to be replaced, not repaired. The one exception is a hinge that has torn out of a door panel; in that situation we can sometimes re-locate the hinge with a backing plate and save the panel, but the hinge itself still gets replaced. A spring that snapped cannot be re-welded or re-wound safely. Call (562) 478-8017 and we will tell you straight if a repair is realistic or if replacement is the only honest option.
Most spring, cable, or hinge replacements take between 60 and 90 minutes once our technician is on site. Full door replacements typically take a half day, including removal of the old door, track adjustment, and clean-up. We schedule parts-only visits with a firm arrival window and confirm by text before we head your way. Call (562) 478-8017 to schedule a time that works around your household’s schedule.
We stock the most common CGI torsion springs, cables, hinges, and bottom seals on our trucks, so a one-trip fix is realistic for most Los Angeles homes. For less common parts, such as a specific strut length on an older Cabana model, we order from our supplier network and typically have the part within 3 to 5 business days. We will tell you before you commit whether your part is on the truck or needs to be ordered. Call (562) 478-8017 with your door’s data plate information and we can tell you over the phone.
Yes. We also carry and service parts for PGT, CWS, and ES Windows impact garage doors, among the eight manufacturer brands we stock. The same pricing transparency and cleanup standard applies no matter which brand is on your home.
CGI impact garage doors carry a limited warranty that varies by product line and installation date, and the warranty typically covers the panel and hardware but not the labor to replace it. The data plate on your door will list the manufacturing date and series, which helps determine warranty coverage. We can help you sort out whether your part is covered during a free estimate visit, and if it is, we will point you to the claim process. Call (562) 478-8017 and have your data plate information ready.
No. The price we give you in writing before the job starts is the price you pay when we leave, unless you approve an additional scope item in writing. If we open up the door and find something unexpected, we stop, explain what we found, and give you a new written number before we touch anything else. The Cedarwell Care Promise means no invoice surprise at the end of the day, and that applies to a $200 cable replacement the same as it applies to a full door install. Call (562) 478-8017 and we will put your estimate in writing before any work starts.
