CGI Door Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Installing a CGI door in Los Angeles typically runs between $1,850 and $4,600, including the door, hardware, weatherproofing, and labor. Most homes here need impact-rated or heavy-gauge steel doors because of coastal humidity, hillside wind, and the simple reality that a well-built opening stops both drafts and dust. The way owners usually find us is a door that suddenly won’t latch, sits crooked in the frame, or lets a blade of afternoon light through a gap that wasn’t there last season.
We’re Lightwell Windows & Doors in Los Angeles, and we carry CGI-compatible doors and hardware, along with the installation experience to get them hung plumb and operating smoothly. Note that we’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with CGI itself, but our techs work with these products every week and know their quirks.
Which CGI Models This Applies To
CGI product lines like Estate Collection, Tuscany Series, and Legacy hinged doors are commonly installed across Los Angeles, from the 1940s ranch homes in Gardena to newer builds in Porter Ranch. The key compatibility gotcha is the hinge prep. CGI doors often use 4-inch-by-4-inch commercial-grade hinges with a specific inset, which means a standard residential hinge mortise will not line up. If you buy an aftermarket hinge set, even a good one, you may discover the hinge knuckle thickness differs by a few millimeters. That’s enough to misalign the door by late summer.
When matching a part, look for the label on the hinge edge of the door slab, usually a white or silver sticker with the series name and a production date. Take a photo of that label plus a close-up of the hinge and the strike plate. Sending those two photos to us saves a return trip. For most CGI doors, the factory weatherstripping is a compression-bulb seal rather than a friction fin, and the threshold is adjustable through a screw system underneath the cap. We stock OEM CGI parts where they matter most, but we will also tell you honestly when a quality aftermarket equivalent gets the same result for less money.
Signs Your CGI Door Installation Is Failing
- Drafts at the threshold when the door is fully closed. This usually means the adjustable threshold has settled or a child’s constant foot traffic has worn the cap. The fix is often a cap replacement, not a whole door.
- The door rubs at the top corner on the latch side. In Los Angeles, hillside homes on pier-and-stem foundations shift seasonally. The slab may move a fraction of an inch, enough to throw off the reveal. A hinge adjustment or shim behind the jamb resolves it.
- The deadlatch no longer seats. When a door is out of plumb, the deadlatch catches on the strike plate, and the door either binds or bounces open. Homeowners deal with this for weeks before calling us.
- Visible light around the jamb at night. This is a sure sign the weatherstrip has compressed past recovery or the jamb was not shimmed tightly at install. It also means dust and insects are getting in, which matters if you have kids crawling on the floor.
- Hardware that started clean and now shows corrosion. Within five miles of the coast, marine air will tarnish hardware quickly. If your CGI door is near Redondo or San Pedro, coated or stainless hardware is worth the upgrade when we install.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Los Angeles, a full CGI door installation with trim, weatherstripping, and hardware replacement runs roughly $1,850 to $3,200 for a single entry. If you’re doing a pair of doors, a premium finish, or structural jamb repair, the range extends to $4,600 or more depending on rot and framing condition. We write the price before any work starts, based on a physical look at the opening and the existing hardware. That number covers the door, hinges, lockset, weatherseal, shims, screws, sealant, installation labor, and clean-up.
The wild card in Los Angeles is the condition of the rough jamb. On older homes in Mid-City or Leimert Park, we routinely find dry rot hidden behind the brickmold that doesn’t show up until the old door comes out. If that happens, we call you, show you what we found, and put the additional framing cost in writing before we touch it. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the finished installation. If a door we hung begins to sag or a seal fails within a year, we come back and make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
Double-checking that your hinges are tight and that the threshold screws have not stripped is a reasonable Saturday job. If those are sound and the door still doesn’t close correctly, stop there. The opening is as important as the window – get that part right and everything else follows. A hired installer must consider the rough opening’s squareness, the subfloor under the threshold, and the weatherproofing behind the jamb before setting the slab. If that is not done right, you get a door that looks good for two months and fails by February.
A wide or heavy impact door carries real pinch and fall risk if hinged improperly, and the slab can easily weigh 120 pounds or more. We handle those jobs with proper lifting and positioning, not a couple of improvised shims. Call us at (562) 478-8017 with the model label and a few photos, and we will tell you what you’re looking at.
FAQs
A correctly installed CGI door in Los Angeles lasts 20 to 30 years for the slab, with weatherstripping and hardware replaced every 5 to 12 years depending on sun exposure and coastal salt. The installation itself should not fail if the framing was properly sealed and shimmed at the start.
Many failures can be repaired, including hinge replacement, re-shimming the jamb, resetting the threshold, or replacing the weatherseal. We only recommend full replacement when the slab is warped, rusted through, or the jamb shows structural rot. Call (562) 478-8017 and we will tell you honestly which one your door needs.
Most single CGI door installations in Los Angeles take one full workday, including tear-out, jamb prep, setting, hardware, trim, and clean-up. If framing repair is needed, we add half a day and tell you before we start, in writing.
We stock common CGI hinge sets, thresholds, weatherstripping profiles, and hardware from our Los Angeles work trucks. Unusual sizes or specialty finishes may need a short order window, and we give you the timeline before you commit to anything.
