PGT Door Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
PGT door installation in Los Angeles typically runs between $850 and $2,600 for a full replacement, including the slab, hardware, weatherstripping, and labor. Most installs are completed in a single day when we have the exact model or a confirmed compatible match on hand. The call usually starts the same way: a roller sounds gritty, a lock doesn’t bite, or the door suddenly needs a hip-check to close. By then, the part has already been failing quietly for months.
What you have is a PGT product that was built to handle Florida-grade wind loads, which means it’s overbuilt for most Los Angeles conditions. That’s good news for longevity, but it also means the parts are not generic big-box hardware. The roller assemblies, hinge sets, and astragals are sized and rated to PGT’s specific extrusion profiles. When a homeowner swaps in a universal hardware aisle replacement, the door usually binds within a season. Keith Yamada has pulled too many of those universal rollers out of PGT tracks to pretend otherwise.
Which PGT Models This Applies To
We work on the full range of PGT sliding glass doors, hinged patio doors, and the WinGuard and SpectraGuard impact-rated lines. The most common service calls we field in Los Angeles are for PGT 5500 and 7700 series sliders, where the tandem steel rollers wear against aluminum track that has picked up grit from dry-season dust and Santa Ana wind debris. The roller housing on these is a PGT-specific extrusion: the wheel diameter, bracket height, and axle offset are not interchangeable with CGI or CWS parts, even though those brands share impact-rating language.
If you look at the door edge or the top rail corner, PGT stamps a serial and model code. Take a photo of that label before throwing the old part away. If the label is sun-bleached into oblivion, a width measurement and a photo of the roller assembly is enough for us to identify the model line from our parts bench. One compatibility gotcha: PGT older series used a machined (not cast) roller axle, and aftermarket replacements with cast axles shear under the weight of the heavier laminated glass panels. We stock OEM PGT parts, and when a quality aftermarket equivalent exists and is genuinely equal, we say so and price it lower. Lightwell Windows & Doors is an independent service provider and not affiliated with PGT. We also stock parts for CGI, CWS, and ES Windows doors.
Signs Your PGT Door Installation Is Failing
- The door drags or jumps in the last six inches of travel. This is almost always a roller with a flat-spotted wheel or a housing that has sagged out of vertical alignment. The heavier the glass, the faster this develops once one roller starts carrying more than its share.
- You hear a grinding that sounds like sand in the track. Los Angeles dust is fine and abrasive. It embeds in the roller bearings and in the track’s lower rail. The fix is a full roller replacement and a track deep-clean, not a squirt of lubricant that turns the grit into paste.
- The lock throws but the door still moves when you push it. The astragal or the strike plate has shifted. On PGT sliders, the interlocking stiles were designed to compress under wind pressure; when the weatherstripping flattens over five to eight years, that compression disappears and the door feels loose even when locked.
- There’s daylight under the door or along one edge. The panel has dropped. The roller adjuster may still turn, but the internal spring is shot or the housing threads are stripped. Raising the screw only masks a part that is done.
- The door gets noticeably harder to open on hot afternoons. The aluminum frame expands in Los Angeles summer heat, and a roller that was marginally out of spec in January becomes a binding problem in August. This is a classic PGT symptom: the frames are close-tolerance, so the expansion window is narrow.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Los Angeles, PGT door installation prices break down by what has actually failed. A roller and track service on a sliding door runs $250 to $650 per panel, including OEM rollers, track cleaning, realignment, and reassembly. A full weatherstripping and astragal replacement runs $180 to $420. A complete door replacement, where the slab or the frame is no longer serviceable, lands between $850 and $2,600 depending on the series, impact rating, and size.
| Service | Typical Los Angeles Price |
|---|---|
| Roller replacement (slider, per panel) | $250 – $650 |
| Weatherstripping & astragal replacement | $180 – $420 |
| Hardware set replacement (handle, lock, strike) | $300 – $750 |
| Full door replacement (non-impact) | $850 – $1,900 |
| Full door replacement (impact-rated) | $1,600 – $2,600 |
Every estimate is a written line-item price before any work starts. You’ll know the cost of the part, the cost of labor, and what the crew will protect while they work: floors covered with drop cloths, furniture moved only with your permission, and a photo of the cleanup before we leave. The work itself is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If it’s not right, we make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
There are two things an owner can safely do before calling us. First, vacuum the track and wipe the rail with a dry cloth. Second, photograph the label, the roller plate, and the door edge. That’s the extent of what we’d tell a friend to do. Sliding door rollers live under tension when the panel is in place, and an impact-rated PGT panel can weigh over 200 pounds. Removing the panel without the right lift and track support is where fingers get pinched and frames get bent. Glass panel handling is not a YouTube skillset. If the roller failure is on a heavy impact door, call (562) 478-8017 and let us set the panel on the bench properly.
For hinged PGT doors, the dangerous failure is the closer arm and the hinge screws, because a sagging slab can pull out of the jamb under its own weight. We’ve seen homeowners crank a hinge screw until the jamb threads stripped, which turns a $280 repair into a full frame replacement. Check it, clean it, then make the call. The estimate is free.
FAQs
Most PGT rollers in Los Angeles last 7 to 12 years, depending on the series and whether the track stays clear of grit. Coastal homes near the marine layer sometimes see corrosion on the axle before the wheel wears, cutting that range shorter. Call (562) 478-8017 with your model code for a more specific read.
Weatherstripping and track realignment can often be corrected without replacement. Rollers and hinge assemblies cannot be rebuilt; once the bearing seals break and grit gets inside, the part is finished. We’ll tell you plainly whether a repair makes sense or is just buying six more months.
Most roller and hardware replacements are completed in two to four hours, including realignment and cleanup. A full PGT door replacement is a one-day job for a standard opening, and we leave the work area swept and photographed when we’re done.
We stock common PGT rollers, hinge sets, astragals, and hardware on the truck for the 5500, 7700, and WinGuard series. For less common models, we can source OEM parts directly, usually within a few business days. You don’t need to order anything yourself.
