Door Installation Stopped Working

If your newly installed door is sticking, failing to latch, swinging open on its own, or letting in a draft it never should have, the installation itself is almost certainly the starting point. Most “stopped working” complaints on a recently installed door trace back to one of four things: hardware set during install that has since shifted, a frame that was not perfectly plumb or square, a threshold seal that was not seated correctly, or a hinge that has worked itself loose under daily use.

Call (562) 478-8017

None of those are normal. A door that was installed right should open, close, latch, and seal without effort for years. If yours is not doing that, something in the install needs attention, and the sooner it gets looked at, the less secondary damage tends to follow. A door that binds against the frame can score the finish. A door that does not seal can let moisture into the rough opening. A door that swings freely on its own is a security and safety problem, especially with kids or pets in the house.

Why It Happens

The Frame or Rough Opening Shifted After Installation

Wood framing moves. It expands in humid weather, contracts when things dry out, and sometimes the house settles in ways that take weeks to show up after a crew has packed up and left. If your door binds or catches in one specific spot, and the binding is worse in one season than another, a frame that has moved is the likely explanation. Run your hand along the gap between the door and the frame. If it is uneven, the door is no longer square in the opening.

Hinges Have Worked Loose or Were Not Set Correctly at Install

A hinge that was not fully mortised into the frame, or whose screws were not driven into solid wood, will gradually pull away from the surface. The door starts to sag on the latch side first. You will notice the latch-side gap getting wider at the top while the hinge side of the door seems to sit lower than it used to. This is one of the more common causes of a door that “drops” and starts dragging on the threshold.

The Threshold or Weatherstripping Was Not Sealed Properly

If you are feeling a draft, seeing daylight around the edges of a closed door, or noticing the door feels different to close than it did the first week, the threshold seal or weatherstripping may not have been set correctly. Weatherstripping that is misaligned or compressed unevenly will not form a consistent seal. Press a piece of paper between the door and the frame, close the door, and try to pull the paper out. If it slides freely anywhere around the perimeter, the seal has a gap.

The Latch or Lock Hardware Is Misaligned

A latch bolt that does not line up with the strike plate will feel stiff, require lifting or pushing the door to engage, or click without actually catching. This usually means the door itself has shifted slightly relative to where the strike plate was drilled. You can see this by looking at the strike plate opening and checking whether the bolt lands cleanly in the center or hits the edge of the hole. A misaligned latch is not just inconvenient – it means the door is not actually secured when you think it is.

What to Do Right Now

  • Stop forcing it. If the door is binding against the frame and requiring significant pressure to open or close, stop using it that way. Repeated forcing scores the frame edge and can crack the door panel itself.
  • Photograph the problem areas. Take clear photos of the gap around the frame, the hinge side, the latch and strike plate, and the threshold. These photos help the technician understand exactly what they are walking into before they arrive.
  • Note when the problem is worst. Morning versus afternoon, humid days versus dry ones, after the house has been heated or cooled – that pattern tells us a lot about whether this is a frame movement issue or a hardware issue.
  • Do not adjust the hinges or strike plate yourself unless you are certain nothing is under tension. On heavy exterior doors or doors with integrated security hardware, disassembling components without knowing how the system is configured can make the door fail to close entirely. If the door is a fire-rated interior door, do not modify the hardware at all – call us first.
  • Keep kids and pets clear of a door that will not latch. A door that swings open on its own is a real hazard. If the latch is not catching, wedge the door temporarily and call (562) 478-8017 to get someone out to look at it.

How We Fix It

When your local Lightwell Windows & Doors technician arrives, they start with a full inspection of the door in its frame before touching anything. They check plumb, check square, test the hinge torque, examine the latch-to-strike alignment, and assess the threshold seal – in that order. Nothing gets adjusted or replaced until they understand the root cause, because fixing the symptom without finding the cause just brings you back to the same problem in a different form.

Depending on what the inspection reveals, the work may fall under door installation correction, which is one of the core services your local Lightwell team handles. The fix might mean resetting hinges into solid backing, shimming the frame, adjusting or replacing the strike plate, or reseating the threshold seal. More serious cases, where the rough opening itself has shifted, may involve a more involved reinstallation.

Before any of that starts, you get a written price. No approximations, no “we’ll know more once we’re in there” surprises. That is how Lightwell works on every single job. The work is also covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it is not right when we leave, we come back and make it right.

Most adjustments take a couple of hours. A more involved reinstallation typically takes a half day. Your technician will tell you the realistic timeline before work begins.
