What’s Happening

A window that has stopped working – one that won’t open, won’t close, or won’t lock – almost always means the hardware, balance system, or frame has failed in a way that goes beyond a quick adjustment. The window itself is usually still there; it’s the mechanics behind it that have given out.

Call (562) 478-8017

This is one of the more common calls your local Lightwell Windows & Doors team gets. Windows are used hundreds of times a year, season after season, and the parts that make them move are under constant stress. When something finally lets go, it usually happens all at once – one morning the window opens fine, the next it won’t budge or won’t stay up. Here’s how to figure out what you’re dealing with before anyone arrives.

Why It Happens

Broken or Worn Balance Springs

Double-hung windows use a balance system – either spiral rods or block-and-tackle springs inside the frame channels – to hold the sash at any height you set it. When a balance fails, the sash drops the moment you let go, or it won’t lift at all even when the latch is open. You can usually confirm this by lifting the sash a few inches with both hands and releasing it slowly: if it slides straight down on its own, a balance is likely the culprit. Because these components are under significant tension, diagnosing beyond this visual check is a job for a trained technician.

Failed or Seized Hardware

Casement and awning windows open on a crank mechanism connected to a multi-point lock. Over time, the crank operator or the espagnolette rods that drive the lock points can corrode, strip their gears, or simply seize from years of humidity cycles. The sign here is a handle that spins without resistance, or a crank that requires excessive force before it moves anything. Sometimes you’ll hear a grinding or skipping sound as the gears slip inside the operator housing.

Frame Warping or Swelling

Wood and some composite frames absorb moisture over the years. When a frame swells, the sash binds against it at the same spot every time – usually the top corner or one side – and the window feels stuck even when the hardware is unlocked. You can tell this is the cause if the window works fine on dry days but jams after rain or in humid weather. Run your hand along the frame edge where it meets the sash and you may feel a ridge or a section that looks slightly bowed.

Damaged or Misaligned Sash

Impact, settling, or a hard slam can knock a sash out of square, causing it to bind in the frame or fail to seat correctly against the weatherstrip when closed. The window may close most of the way but leave a visible gap at one corner, or it may close completely but refuse to latch because the lock hardware no longer lines up. If you look at the sash from outside and the gap around its perimeter is wider on one side than the other, misalignment is a strong possibility.

What to Do Right Now

  • Stop forcing it. If the window isn’t moving, don’t keep trying. Forcing a bound sash can crack the glass, strip the hardware further, or bend the frame. Note where it stops and leave it there.
  • Photograph the problem area. Get a photo of the visible damage, the stuck point, any gaps in the frame, and the hardware position. These images help the technician order the right parts before the first visit.
  • If the window won’t close or latch, secure it temporarily. A window that can’t lock is a security and weather exposure concern. Wedge it closed with a door stopper or a sash lock block – never leave it open and unattended overnight.
  • Do not attempt to remove the sash yourself if it has spring balances. Balance springs store real mechanical energy. Releasing one incorrectly can cause the sash to drop suddenly or the spring to snap back with enough force to cause injury. This is a task for someone trained in window mechanics.
  • Note whether it’s one window or several. If multiple windows in the same room or on the same wall have started sticking around the same time, frame settling or moisture infiltration affecting the structural opening may be involved – that context helps your local Lightwell team scope the job correctly.

How We Fix It

When your local Lightwell Windows & Doors technician arrives, the first step is a hands-on inspection of the sash, frame, hardware, and balance system to confirm what the actual failure point is – not just what it looks like from the outside. Before any work starts, you’ll get a written price. That’s not a formality; it’s how every job runs under our no-hassle upfront pricing policy. No surprises at the end.

Depending on what the inspection finds, the fix may fall under window replacement or window installation using products from the eight brands we carry: PGT, CGI, CWS, ES Windows, ECO Window Systems, Mr-Glass, Therma-Tru, and ViewLux. The recommendation follows what the home actually needs, not which brand is most convenient for us. Most single-window jobs can be completed in one visit. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise – if it’s not right after we leave, we come back and make it right. No debate.

What Our Customers Say

★★★★★ 4.8 from 5+ reviews

"Replaced six windows. The crew laid runners through the house and vacuumed each room as they finished. With a crawling baby, that no mess thing meant a lot. Windows are gorgeous."

- Rosalind Kemp

"Lovely windows and a tidy install. One window came in a couple weeks late from the factory, so that opening finished after the others. They kept me posted and the rest was spotless."

- Mia Donnelly

"Quiet, considerate install of several windows. They cleaned the glass and the sills and vacuumed every room. You'd never know a crew had been through. House is quieter and brighter."
